Isaiah Vela (West Chicago, Ill./St. Charles East), Sophomore, 149 pounds
Vela registered a 4-0 record with four pins to win the 149-pound bracket at the Luther (Iowa) Open on Saturday. He posted three of his pins in under one minute, including one in 57 seconds against Cornell's Trevor Engle, the No. 1 ranked wrestler at 149 according to D3wrestle.com and No. 3 according to the National Wrestling Coaches Association. Vela pinned Wartburg's Mark Pinero, ranked ninth in Division III by the NWCA, in 29 seconds in the championship match. Vela also competed in a dual meet against Division I Wisconsin earlier in the week, and was defeated by the Badgers' Andrew Crone.
