Warhawk Swim Excels in Decorah

Men 2nd Overall, Women 4th in the competitive Luther Invite

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's & women's swim & dive teams rounded out competition in the Luther Invite on Saturday evening. Both the Warhawk men & women improved on their standings from Friday night, with the men climbing to 2nd place overall with 572 total points. The women improved to 4th place with 383 total points. Throughout the two days, 13 men & 19 women timed in at new personal bests. 

The Warhawks started Saturday's events with a 2nd-place finish in the women's 200 medley relay. Izzy Doczy (Greendale, Wis./Greendale), Hailey Vogel (Rockwell City, Iowa/Fort Dodge), Jenna Denton (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon), & Grace Linstroth (Port Washington, Wis./Port Washington) timed in at 1:49.44. The Warhawk men's relay tied for third place, touching at the same time as Gustavus. The relay of Ethan Schmohe (Sullivan, Ill./Sullivan), Noah Johnson (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb), Matt Ozog (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin), & Ethan Bergman (Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) timed in at 1:36.79.

Daniel Keller (Omaha, Neb./Papillion-LaVista) represented UWW in the 400 IM 'A' Finals, placing 3rd overall in the finals with a time of 4:19.05.

 Jenna Denton (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) reached the 'A' Finals in the 100 butterfly, placing 7th overall in the heat with a 1:01.16. 

On the men's side of the 100 butterfly, the Warhawks had success in both the A &B Finals.  On the A Final side, Schmohe placed 4th in a very tight race. Schmohe was just 0.02 seconds away from a second-place finish with his time of 52.14. Matt Ozog (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) joined Schmohe in the 'A' Finals with a 7th place finish with 53.45 touch. On the 'B' Finals, Ethan Bergman (Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) placed first overall to win the heat, Bergman touched at 52.85.

The Women's team found gold in the 100 breaststroke, as Hailey Vogel (Rockwell City, Iowa/Fort Dodge) finished a whole second above her competition at 1:05.78. Noah Johnson (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) was the runner-up on the men's side, timing in at 58.75 in the 100 breast. 

In the men's 200 backstroke, Ethan Schmohe (Sullivan, Ill./Sullivan) highlighted the Warhawks in a race that was mostly with Gustavus Adolphus with five of the 8 swimmers in the 'A' finals. Schmohe finished 4th overall with a time of 1:59.16.

In the fastest events of the day, the Warhawk women had two in the 'A' Finals for the 50 freestyle. Jenna Denton (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) was 4th overall with a 24.90 time, with teammate Hailey Vogel (Rockwell City, Iowa/Fort Dodge) finishing 7th with a 25.13 time.

Ethan Bergman (Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) & Owen Phillips (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa Township) highlighted the men's side of the 50 freestyle, Bergman was runner-up with a time of 21.42 with Phillips in 8th with a 21.96 in the close race.

Right after the success in the quickest race, the Warhawks showed versatility with he longest race. The women's team had two in the top 8 of the 1650 freestyle, Nikolina Gallo (Greendale, Wis./Greendale) - 4th (18:51.71) and Carly Pierzchalski (Crystal Lake, Ill./Harry D Jacobs) - 6th (19:00.04).

On the men's side, Caleb Weis (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) touched 15 seconds ahead of everyone to take the crown. Weis finished at 16:41.15, & his teammate Daniel Madson (Kiel, Wis./Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah) followed right behind with a 3rd place finish at 17:09.38.

In the diving events, Drew Schmitz (Appleton, Wis./North) took 4th in both the 1 meter (375.40) & 3 meter (320.50) competitions.  
 
FRIDAY RECAP

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's & women's swim teams began competition in the Luther Open on Friday, November 21st. After the first rounds of prelims & finals, the Warhawk men are in third place out of the seven teams with 286 points. The women's squad is in 5th with 167 total points. 

Friday's events consisted of the 200 Freestyle, 200 IM, 500 Freestyle, 100 Backstroke, 200 Breaststroke, 100 Freestyle, 200 Butterfly, and 100 IM. In the morning, the prelim session also had the 800 relay finals, with the 200 relay &400 medley taking place in the evening section. 

The Warhawks had a strong showing, 12 individuals reached the 'A' finals after the prelims, timing in the top 8 of swimmers in their respective events. 

In the evening session, the Warhawks 200 relay teams got the night started, with a 3rd place finish from the women's relay of Grace Linstroth (Port Washington, Wis./Port Washington), Addi Sanow (Munster, Ind./Munster), Hailey Vogel (Rockwell City, Iowa/Fort Dodge), & Jenna Denton (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon). The Men's team of Ethan Schmohe (Sullivan, Ill./Sullivan), Ethan Bergman (Kenosha, Wis./Bradford), Owen Phillips (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa Township) and Dom Schlueter (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) finished 2nd overall with a time of 1:24.64.

Noah Johnson (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) qualified for two 'A' Finals in both the 200 IM & the 200 Breaststroke. In the 200 IM, Johnson placed 5th overall with a time of 1:59.29 then placed 4th in the 200 breast with a time of 2:12.22. Also in the 200 IM, Daniel Keller (Omaha, Neb./Papillion-LaVista) placed 9th overall, winning the B Finals with a time of 2:00.77. Johnson was also joined by fellow Warhawk Sheamus Horton (Lago Vista, Tex./Lago Vista) in the 200 breast. Horton finished 7th overall in the A final with a time of 2:15.32.

Both the men's & women's team had a strong showing in the 500 free, the longest race of the night. On the women's side, Carly Pierzchalski (Crystal Lake, Ill./Harry D Jacobs) reached the 'A' Finals where she placed 6th in the evening session with a time of 5:22.15. Nikolina Gallo (Greendale, Wis./Greendale) also excelled, touching first in the 'B' Finals to finish 9th overall with a time of 5:24.81.

On the men's 500, Caleb Weis (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) continued his dominant run with a 1st place finish with a 4:48.64 touch. Daniel Madson (Kiel, Wis./Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah) improved on his standings from the prelims, finishing 7th in the 500 with a time of 4:55.75.

Four more Warhawks placed in the top ten of the 100 backstroke. Jenna Denton (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) placed fourth in the A finals with a time of 1:00.18, as Izzy Doczy (Greendale, Wis./Greendale) won the 'B' Finals with a time of 1:02.60. For the men, Ethan Schmohe (Sullivan, Ill./Sullivan) placed 3rd overall (52.38) with Matt Bricco winning the 'B' Finals as well with a time of 54.64 as the 9th overall finisher.

In the women's 100 freestyle, Emma Vogel placed 8th overall with a time of 54.82, Addi Sanow (Munster, Ind./Munster) closely followed her, reaching the top-10 of the 100 free with a 55.10. 

On the men's side of the 100 free, Dom Schlueter (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) earned bronze with a 46.82 touch. Ethan Bergman (Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) placed 4th, with nearly an identical time of 46.86.

Rounding out the night, Daniel Keller (Omaha, Neb./Papillion-LaVista) won the 200 breast 'B' Final to place 9th overall in the event with a 2:02.19 finish. In the 100 IM, Bricco touched at 56.14 to take 7th overall.

The night finished with the 400 medley, the Warhawk men's squad of Schmohe,  Johnson, Bergman, & Schlueter placed 4th overall out of the 26 relay teams with a time of 3:30.95.

The Luther Open will continue tomorrow with a prelim session in the morning, followed by an evening session starting at 5 PM.
