Kalla Schaefer (Madison/Madison Memorial) was named Walmart singles player of the week for women's tennis. On Tuesday, she was also named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference singles player of the week.
Schaefer went 6-0 on the weekend playing in the ITA Midwest Regional Championships. The tournament included a field of 18 of the top tennis teams in the midwest. Schaefer won the draw of 64 knocking off four seeded players on the way, including the #1 seed Kathryn Schmidt of Carleton College 6-2, 7-5, 6-3 in the semis, and McKennah Edwards of St. Mary's 6-2, 6-2 in the finals. The only other time a WIAC player has won this event was in 2008, when Schaefer did it as a freshman. Winning this tournament gives Schaefer automatic ITA All-America honors.
Alexandra Bayliss (Sheboygan/North) and once again Schaefer were both named Walmart doubles players of the week. They earned double honors on Tuesday, as they were named the WIAC doubles players of the week too.
This duo went 5-0 on the weekend playing in the ITA Midwest Regional Championships. Schaefer/Bayliss won the draw of 32 knocking off three seeded teams on the way, including the #1 seeded team of Kathryn Schmidt/Anne Lombardi of Carleton College 8-4 in the semis, and the #2 seeded team of Megan Gaard/Alex Ericson of Gustavus 6-3, 6-3 in the finals. This is the first time a team from the WIAC has won this event. The win gives Schaefer and Bayliss automatic ITA All-America honors.
