Warhawks Top the Field; Demos Improves School Record

The UW-Whitewater men's and women's track and field teams hosted the UW-Whitewater Invite on Saturday and finished first out of nine teams.  The women won five events while Sara Poppe (Germantown/Kettle Moraine Lutheran) was the winner of two and Shelby Demos (Janesville/Parker) was the winner of one other while improving on a school record that she set at last weeks meet.

Poppe, the only winner of multiple events for the UW-W women, took first in the triple jump with a distance of 35 feet and 9.25 inches and also won the long jump with a distance of 16 feet and 9.75 inches.  Demos, who set a school record and provisionally qualified last weekend, topped her performance this weekend by automatically qualifying for the 2010 NCAA Indoor track and field championships while improving on her school record with a height of 5 feet and 7.25 inches.

The other event winners were Brooke Bell (Milwaukee/Alexander Hamilton), who won the 55 meter dash in a time of 7.47, and Jessa Luebke (Tomah/Tomah), who won the shot put with a distance of 41 feet and 7.25 inches.

The women also had 22 other athletes or relay teams finish in the top five of their event.

The Warhawks will travel to Naperville, Illinois for the North Central Triangular on Friday, January 29.  The women will be at home again on February 6 when they host the Warhawk Classic beginning at noon in the Kachel Fieldhouse.
