UW-Whitewater's Amy Gahl (Beloit/Parkview), Jessica Stang (Minnetonka, MN/Minnetonka) and Suzanne Gersich (Wadsworth, IL/Warren) earned 2009 Division III All-America honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Gahl and Stang were first team picks and Gersich made the third team.
Gahl, a senior outfielder, batted .435 with 52 runs scored and nine stolen bases. She wound up her career with the school and Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference record in hits (230) and runs (185). She was also the school record holder in both categories for a single season. She closed her career with a .410 batting average. First Team All-WIAC three times, Gahl was the WIAC Position Player of the Year in 2007 as well as a NFCA Second Team All-American. She was also the WIAC Co-Scholar Athlete in Softball this spring, and earned first team Academic All-District honors for the 2009 season.
Stang, a sophomore left-handed pitcher, went 21-3 with a 0.84 earned run average this spring. She struck out 199 batters in 167.1 innings, walking just 32, and opponents batted .166 against her. Stang was the 2009 WIAC Pitcher of the Year after sharing the award as a freshman. She set school records with the 21 wins and 199 strikeouts. Her wins included eight shutouts, also a school record. Stang also chalked up five saves in 2009, also number one in the Warhawk record book. Earlier this month she was named second team Academic All-District.
Gersich, like Gahl a senior outfielder, batted .492 with 43 runs, 39 runs batted in, a .846 slugging percentage and .546 on base average. Three times a First Team All-WIAC pick, she is the UW-W and WIAC career RBI (170) and home run (37) record holder. She also set the UW-W single season mark in 2008. Gersich has the second highest career batting average, .417, in Warhawk softball history. She was also a third team Academic All-District pick this year.
The trio helped UW-Whitewater compile a 38-7 record in 2009, winning the WIAC championship and earning a berth in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III championship tournament.
