Warhawks up to 3-0

The "Iowa thing" seems to be agreeing with the UW-Whitewater women's basketball team.  For the third straight game, all on the road, the Warhawks defeated a team in Iowa.  UW-Whitewater, ranked ninth in the national Division III poll,  defeated Buena Vista University 83-68 Friday night in the Simpson Classic in Indianola, Iowa.

UW-W got off quickly, leading 7-0 and kept the lead the rest of the way.  The Warhawks were in front 41-36 at halftime.  Buena stayed within striking distance for much of the second half, but Whitewater led by double digits the last 5:59 of the game, including an 18 point bulge at 83-65 with 0:29 left.

Senior guard Heidi Sonntag (Milwaukee/Wisconsin Lutheran) was the game's leading scorer with 20 points, hitting 7-8 from the field, including three of her shots from behind the arc.  Senior point Kelsey Hendrickson (Monroe/Monroe) added 18 points, adding 3-5 shooting from three point range.  Nicole Bundy (Fredonia/Ozaukee) added 10 points.  Forward Chantel Burg (Hartford/Hartford Union) led the Warhawks with nine rebounds.  The Warhawks shot 45% from the floor, 43% from three point range.

Guard Margo Muhlbauer scored 19 points for Buena Vista, shooting 6-21 from the floor and 6-6 from the line.  Forward Laura Hilby and center Aubrey Hauswrith added 12 and 10, respectively.  Forward Jocelyn Koch grabbed 12 rebounds for the game high.  BVU shot 37% from the floor and 33% from three point range.

Part of Whitewater's winning margin came at the free throw line.  The Warhawks went 25-36 while Loras was 20-25.

The Iowa tour will end Saturday with the Warhawks facing host Simpson College in the Simpson Classic. 

UW-W, 3-0, will open the home schedule and the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season December 2 at 7:00 against UW-La Crosse.  The game has been designated as "Think Pete Night" in honor of former assistant Pete Von Allmen, who recently passed away.
