All-around athlete who excelled in track (letters in 1933-35), Bill was conference and state champion in the 100 and 220 yard dashes in 1933, and a member of the conference champion relay teams of 1933 and 1934. A 1935 Whitewater graduate, he coached at high schools in Illinois and Michigan before becoming basketball coach at Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, from 1946-53. His Eastern teams ranked first in the nation in scoring in 1951-52 and first in free throwing during that season and the next. Professor and basketball coach since 1954 at Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Healey’s overall college record as a cage coach is 232 won, 133 lost, and it includes six consecutive conference crowns from 1947-52. He found time to earn Master’s and Doctor’s degrees in education, and has written numerous books and professional articles. Elected Hall of Fame 1968.
