The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's track and field programs will be represented by a number of Warhawks at the 2023 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships. The championship meet is slated for March 10-11 at Birmingham Crossplex in Birmingham, Alabama.
For the UWW men, sophomore
Christian Patzka (Black Earth, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) is the national favorite in the 5,000 meter run. His time of 13:40.26 is more than three seconds faster than the next qualifier. Sophomore
Gunner Schlender (Brillion, Wis./Brillion) will also compete in the event, heading into the national meet as the 15th seed.
Patzka will also compete in the 3,000 meter run. His time of 8:04.13 is ranked third in the country this season.
Junior
Justin Krause (Ixonia, Wis./Pewaukee) posted the tenth-fastest time in the mile, 4:05.80, this season. The prelims and finals of the event are likely to be exciting as less than six seconds separates seeds 2-20.
Marlon Cystrunk (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) will represent UW-Whitewater in the 60 hurdles. The sophomore's 8.14 is seeded 14th heading into the championship meet.
Two Warhawks will compete in the triple jump this weekend. Sophomore Shelvin Garrett is seeded 9th with a distance of 14.69 meters while senior
Brayden Zettle (Monroe, Wis./Monroe) is seeded 11th with a season best leap of 14.63 meters.
Representing the Warhawk women, UWW sophomore
Gracie Holland (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) has the top pole vault height in Division III this season, 4.00 meters, to go into the championship as the top seed.
Tina Shelton (Janesville, Wis./Parker) has had a phenomenal indoor season on the track. Her program record clocking of 7.55, is seeded second, just one-hundredth of a second behind the DIII leader. The sophomore will also compete in the 200. Her seed time of 24.77 is 13th heading into Birmingham.
