Back To Back: Gymnastics Earns Second Straight National Title

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater gymnastics team claimed the fifth national championship in program history Friday with a school record score of 193.700 at the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association Team Championship at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass.
 
The Warhawks' title is their second straight and fifth in the last seven years. The team shattered the previous program record score of 193.025, set in 2014.
 
Junior Lisa O'Donnell (Berwyn, Ill./Morton West) captured her second straight all-around national championship with a score of 38.675, tied for the fifth-best mark in program history. O'Donnell is now a four-time national champion.
 
UW-Whitewater started the meet on vault, posting a team score of 47.825, tied for 18th in the program record book. Sophomore Lauren Marshall (Winthrop Harbor, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) led the team with the second-best mark in the field, a 9.775, tied for ninth in program history. Senior Chloe Rehberg (Cary, IL/Cary-Grove) collected a 9.650, good for a tie for fifth, and junior Erika Briscoe (Solon, Iowa/Solon) tied the 14th-best score of the meet at 9.550. O'Donnell and freshman Blaise Wilson (Thornton, Colo./Legacy) matched scores at 9.425.
 
The Warhawks tied a school record on the uneven parallel bars with a score of 48.675. O'Donnell broke a school record with a 9.900, the highest mark at the meet. Wilson and Mierow tied for the third-best mark with a 9.750, tied for the 14th-best in program history. Junior Bailey Fitzpatrick (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) tied the No. 20 score in the program record book with a. 9.725, and senior Christina Slack (Albrightsville, PA/Jim Thorpe) recorded a 9.550.
 
UW-Whitewater took three of the top four scores on balance beam, setting a school record with a team score of 48.450. Junior Franchesca Hutton (Shakopee, Minn./Main Street School of Performing Arts) tied for first with a 9.750, tied for fifth in the school record book, Mierow totaled a 9.725, good for third at the meet and tied for 14th in program history, and junior Abby Helmke (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) collected a 9.700, tied for the No. 25 mark in program history and tied for fourth at the meet. Briscoe earned a 9.650, and O'Donnell registered a 9.625.
 
The Warhawks concluded the meet on the floor exercise, posting the No. 2 score in the program record book at 48.750. Sophomore Acacia Fossum (Gladstone, N.D./Richardton-Taylor) tied the second-best score at the meet with a 9.825, good for a tie for third in the UW-Whitewater record book. Hutton tied for the fifth best score with a 9.800, tied for eighth all time at UW-Whitewater, and Mierow tied the program's No. 22 score at 9.750. O'Donnell ended her night with a 9.725, and Helmke contributed a 9.650.
 
The Warhawks continue action at the NCGA Championships Saturday in the Individual Event Finals, which begin at 3 p.m. Central Time.
