The University of Wisconsin- Whitewater women's basketball team downed UW-River Falls, 83-72, in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletics Conference matchup Saturday afternoon at Kachel Gymnasium.
The Warhawks shot 40-of-50 from the free throw line in the game and clinched a share of the WIAC title in their victory over UW-River Falls (15-8 overall, 6-6 WIAC).
Senior guard
Brooke Trewyn (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) tallied a career high 31 points and 9 rebounds to lead the Warhawks and shot a perfect 17-of-17 from the free throw line. Senior guard
Malia Smith (Bolingbrook, Ill./Neuqua Valley) added 13 points, sophomore guard
Camri Conley (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) recorded 12 points, and senior forward tallied 11 points.
UW-Whitewater and UW-River Falls traded basket in the first quarter, recording seven lead changes and six ties in the period.
Junior guard
Becky Raeder (Sheboygan Falls, Wis./Sheboygan Falls) drained a 3-point basket with 2:30 remaining in the period to give the Warhawks a 4-point lead.
UW-River Falls made two free-throws with three seconds remaining in the quarter to take the lead, 27-26, at the end of the period.
UW-Whitewater (20-3 overall, 10-2 WIAC) started the second quarter with a 7-0, including a 3-point basket from Trewyn to give the Warhawks a six point lead, 33-27, and they would keep the lead the rest of the game.
With 7:21 remaining in the third quarter, Trewyn found Meinert and Meinert sank the basket to give the UW-Whitewater an eight point lead.
Despite UW-River Falls trailing by just one with 5:27 remaining in the period, the Warhawks would remain on top.
Free-throws from Conley with less than two minutes remaining in the third quarter gave UW-Whitewater a 7-point lead.
The Warhawks continued to extend the lead in the fourth quarter. A pair free throws from Conley with 6:53 remaining in the game gave UW-Whitewater an 11-point lead.
With 1:18 remaining in play UW-River Falls came back within six, but the Warhawks would hold the lead.
Trewyn sank both free-throw attempts with 11 seconds remaining in the game to help close out the victory.
UW-Whitewater shot 19-of-20 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter and forced 17 turnovers by UW-River Falls in the game to help secure the win.
The Warhawks will continue conference play Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. against UW-Platteville at Kachel Gymnasium.
