The No. 8 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team placed third at the 35-team Pete Willson-Wheaton Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Wheaton, Ill.
The Warhawks tallied 120.5 points, only 16.5 shy of first-place Messiah (Pa.) and 10 behind runner-up Mount Union (Ohio).
UW-Whitewater placed among the top six in seven different weight classes.
Junior
Nick Stencel (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) finished as runner-up at 184 pounds, falling to the nation's No. 1 ranked wrestler, Grant Wedepohl of UW-Platteville, in a narrow 6-2 decision. Stencel finished his run to second place with a 4-1 record, including one pin and one major decision, for the weekend.
Sophomores
Mike Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) and
Hazen Rice (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) placed third at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively. Tortorice defeated UW-La Crosse's Zach Villarreal, a consensus top 10 wrestler in the nation, in a 10-3 decision in the third-place bout. Rice recovered from a semifinal defeat with two wins over seeded opponents, including an 8-4 decision over UW-Stevens Point's Matt Berlin to clinch third.
Senior
Austin Quartullo (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) grinded his way through the consolation bracket at 149 pounds to reach the third-place match, where he was edged in a 9-6 decision to finish fourth.
After knocking off top-seeded Steve Bonsall of Chicago on Friday, junior
Isaiah Vela (West Chicago, Ill./St. Charles East) dropped two straight matches before finishing the day with a pin against Grant Zamin of UW-La Crosse to place fifth at 157.
Senior
Jordan Newman (Blaine, MN/St. John's Military Academy) placed sixth at 197 pounds after forfeiting his final two matches of the day. Junior
Nicholas Bonomo (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) finished sixth at 174.
The Warhawks compete in their final dual of the season Wednesday against UW-Eau Claire on Senior Night at the Williams Center. Prior to competition, Newman and Quartullo will be recognized for their achievements during their careers with the program.
