Gymnastics Edges UW-La Crosse on Senior Day

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater gymnastics team capped its 2016 regular season Saturday with its best score of the season to defeat rival UW-La Crosse 190.775-190.175 in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference meet at Russell Arena.
 
The Warhawks' final tally was the team's No. 6 mark in program history and the third score of more than 190 this season.
 
Junior Courtney Pickett (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood) posted a season-best all-around score of 38.400 to lead UW-Whitewater, winning the floor exercise and tying for the team's best score on the balance beam on her way to the performance.
 
The Warhawks set the tone of the meet early on the vault, finishing with a 48.150, good for a season-best result and the fourth-best score in the program record book. UW-Whitewater took four of the top five spots in the event, led by junior Katie Fiorilli (Solon, OH/Solon) and freshman Destiny Patrick (Columbia, Mo./Hickman), who tied for the top spot with a 9.725, tied for the No. 13 mark in school history. Pickett and senior Hannah Lee (Clarksville, TN/Clarksville) tied for fourth with matching scores of 9.600, and freshman Lisa O'Donnell (Berwyn, Ill./Morton West) recorded a 9.500 to tie for seventh.
 
O'Donnell paced UW-Whitewater on the uneven parallel bars, totaling a 9.575 to place third and help the team score a 46.900, the No. 20 mark in program history. Junior Mackenzie Smith (Milwaukee, Wis./Martin Luther) placed fourth with a 9.450, followed by Pickett, who was sixth with a 9.400, and Fiorilli, who was eighth with a 9.250. Senior Amanda Quinn (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) rounded out Warhawk scoring with a 9.225, good for ninth.
 
The Warhawks tied the program's seventh best score in history on the balance beam, tallying a 47.600. Lee and Pickett led the group with matching scores of 9.600, while senior Kristin Shackleton (New Lenox, IL/Lincoln Way Central) was next with a 9.550, good for sixth overall. Sophomore Kate Mierow (Brookfield, WI/Brookfield Central) tallied a 9.500 to tie for seventh, and O'Donnell was ninth with a 9.450.
 
UW-Whitewater wrapped up the meet with a 48.025 in the floor exercise, tied for the No. 12 mark in the school record book. Pickett's mark of 9.800 matched the No. 5 score in program history and won the event by a tenth of a point. O'Donnell was second with a 9.700, tied for the No. 20 result in the record book, followed by freshman Franchesca Hutton (Shakopee, Minn./Main Street School of Performing Arts), who registered a 9.625. Fiorilli placed seventh with a 9.525, and senior Megan Love (Henrico, VA/Godwin) was 10th with a mark of 9.375.
 
Following the meet, Lee, Love, Quinn, Shackleton and fellow seniors Ginny Ebker (Fenton, MO/Rockwood Summit) and Steffi Heuer (Clarksville, TN/Middle College at APSU) were recognized for their accomplishments after competing in the team's final home meet of the year. Over the last four years, the Warhawks have won two conference championships and a pair of National Collegiate Gymnastics Association national titles.
 
UW-Whitewater begins postseason competition Friday at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference/NCGA West Regional Championship. The eight-team meet is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at UW-La Crosse.
