Balanced Effort Helps Gymnastics Take Home Opener

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater gymnastics team bested three Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents Saturday at the team's 2016 home opener at Russell Arena.
 
The Warhawks finished with a season-high score of 190.000, the No. 10 score for one meet in program history. The team also recognized its parents and 10.0 Club members prior to the start of the meet.
 
UW-Eau Claire placed second with a 184.625, UW-Oshkosh was third with a 184.200 and UW-Stout finished fourth with a tally of 181.075.
 
UW-Whitewater posted a 47.200 on the vault, its first event of the meet. Junior Katie Fiorilli (Solon, OH/Solon) and freshman Destiny Patrick (Columbia, Mo./Hickman) finished 1-2 overall with scores of 9.550 and 9.525, respectively. Senior Hannah Lee (Clarksville, TN/Clarksville), junior Courtney Pickett (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood) and sophomore Chloe Rehberg (Cary, IL/Cary-Grove) all tied for seventh overall to round out Warhawk scorers with an identical mark of 9.375.
 
The Warhawks swept each of the top five spots on the uneven parallel bars for a score of 47.700, the No. 6 score in program history. Freshman Lisa O'Donnell (Berwyn, Ill./Morton West) won the event to post her third consecutive finish among the top two and fourth straight among the top five. Her score of 9.675 is tied for 20th in program history.
 
Senior Amanda Quinn (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) was close behind in second with a 9.600, followed, in order, by Fiorilli at 9.525, junior Mackenzie Smith (Milwaukee, Wis./Martin Luther) at 9.500 and senior Megan Love (Henrico, VA/Godwin), who scored a 9.400.
 
On the balance beam, senior Kristin Shackleton (New Lenox, IL/Lincoln Way Central) recorded a result of 9.725, tied for the fifth-best in program history, to place second overall and lead the team to a 47.375, good for ninth all time in the program record book. Junior Courtney Pickett (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood) was seventh with a 9.575, freshman Franchesca Hutton (Shakopee, Minn./Main Street School of Performing Arts) was eighth with a 9.500 and Love was ninth with a 9.475. Senior Steffi Heuer (Clarksville, TN/Middle College at APSU) rounded out UW-Whitewater scorers with a 9.100, good for a tie for 11th.
 
The Warhawks concluded the meet with their best effort of the night in the floor exercise, registering a team mark of 47.725, the No. 17 score in program history. O'Donnell capped her fantastic meet with a first-place score of 9.650. Pickett placed second with a 9.600, followed, in order, by Lee (9.575) and Fiorilli (9.525). Love was seventh with a 9.375.

Pickett won the all-around competition with a score of 37.900.
 
UW-Whitewater, which has defeated 10 of its 11 opponents in meets so far, visits Division I Southeast Missouri State Friday for a dual meet. Events are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
