Balkin/Osborne Win ITA Regional Doubles Championship

Sunday Recap
Byron Balkin (Madison/Memorial) and Mitch Osborne (Crystal Lake, IL/Central), the number two seed in the USTA/ITA Regional hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, upset the top seeded team of Amrik Donkena and Mya Smith-Dennis of GAC, the 2011 regional champions, 6-2, 6-3 to earn win the doubles championship. The team of Balkin and Osborne mark the second UW-W doubles team to win the ITA Regional Doubles Championship in three years joining Jake Macey and Erik Scanlan (Libertyville, IL/Libertyville) from 2010.

The Warhawks had four men advance to the round of sixteen in the singles competition. Mya Smith-Dennis of GAC won the singles competition.

In the Midwest Open Doubles Championship, which runs in conjunction with the ITA Regional, a Whitewater versus Whitewater battle was featured. Max Hawksford (Hudson/Hudson) and Michael Schnarr (Madison/Memorial) defeated their teammates Matt Bisbee (Chicago, IL/Marist) and Nate Campanile 6-3, 4-6, 12-10 to win the championship.

Three Warhawks advanced to the round of sixteen in the Midwest Open. David Brown of Gustavus Adolphus was crowned the singles champion in the competition.

This competition ends the Warhawk men's fall season. UW-W will await the indoor season with the first match slated for January 25, 2013 against Northern Illinois University at 1:00 pm.

Saturday Recap
The UW-Whitewater doubles team of Byron Balkin (Madison/Memorial) and Mitch Osborne (Crystal Lake, IL/Central) advanced to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional Doubles Championship to face the top seeded team from host school Gustavus Adolphus College to be played Sunday.

Teammates Andrew Bayliss (Sheboygan/North) and Ben Shklyar (Deerfield, IL/Deerfield) advanced to the semifinal before falling to the number one seeded team from GAC Amrik Donkena and Mya Smith-Dennis.

In the singles competition, the Warhawks had four men advance to the round of sixteen. Jake Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper) went 3-0 Friday before falling to the number one seed and last year's singles champion Donkena of GAC 7-6, 1-6, 7-6. Ben Klein followed a similar path and was halted by third seed Fabricio Moncada of St. John's 6-3, 7-5. Similarly, Andy McGlashen (Southampton, England/) was 3-0 Friday but fell to eighth seed Jeff Lotz of Carthage 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 in the first match Saturday.

Ben Shklyar (Deerfield, IL/Deerfield) received a first round bye and then won two matches Friday before being forced to retire after the first set in a match against the ninth seed Juan Luis Chu of Gustavus Adolphus Saturday morning. 

GAC also hosts the Midwest Open in conjunction with the ITA Regional featuring multiple Warhawks. Nate Campanile carried a 3-0 Friday record into Saturday's competition defeating his first two opponents to advance to the semifinal against Michael Lieberman of GAC to be played Sunday morning.

On the doubles courts, Saturday's competition had two UW-W teams advance to the championship. Sunday afternoon's  final will feature Matt Bisbee (Chicago, IL/Marist) and Campanile against teammates Max Hawksford (Hudson/Hudson) and Michael Schnarr (Madison/Memorial).

Friday Recap
The UW-Whitewater men's tennis team had seven flights, four in singles and three in doubles, remain unbeaten at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, Minnesota Friday.

The ITA Regional will continue Saturday and conclude Sunday.  The regional winners will advance to the ITA National Small College Championship in Mobile, Alabama October 11-14.

Ben Shklyar (Deerfield, IL/Deerfield), the fifth overall seed in the tournament, went 2-0 on his first day of competition.  After a first round bye Shklyar defeated Yasushi Inoue of Coe College 6-4, 6-2, and Marcel Gyswyt of Gustavus 7-5, 6-2.

Jake Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper), Ben Klein, and Andy McGlashen (Southampton, England/) were the other Warhawk men to advance to the round of sixteen in singles, each going 3-0 on Friday.  Humphreys won his first two matches 6-1, 6-0 and his third match 6-7, 7-5, 10-7.  Klein won all three of his matches in straight sets and McGlashen advanced with wins over players from UW-La Crosse, Gustavus and Coe.

Byron Balkin (Madison/Memorial) and Mitch Osborne (Crystal Lake, IL/Central), the number two seed in doubles, won two matches Friday to advance to the quarterfinals.  Their first match was an 8-5 victory over Michael Roden and Dave Stingley from UW-Eau Claire and their second match was an 8-3 win over Joey MacGibbon and Bradley Entwistle of Gustavus.

Andrew Bayliss (Sheboygan/North) teamed up with Shklyar as the number seven seed and won a pair of matches 8-6 to advance to the quarters.  UW-W's other doubles team to remain unbeaten on Friday was McGlashen and Ben Klein.  Together the tandem won two matches 8-5 apiece.

The Midwest Open runs in conjunction with the ITA Regional Championship and is for players that do not qualify as their team's top seeds.  In singles, Michael Schnarr (Madison/Memorial), Nate Campanile and Max Hawksford (Hudson/Hudson) all remained unbeaten for UW-W to advance to the round of sixteen.  In doubles, Matt Bisbee (Chicago, IL/Marist) and Campanile won two matches to advance to the quarterfinals while Hawksford and Schnarr also won a pair to advance.
