Gymnasts Ready for Conference with 7-0 Mark

To use a sports cliche', UW-Whitewater is peaking at the right time.  One week from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference gymnastics championship the Warhawks recorded their second highest score in school history in a 189.375-184.90 win over UW-Oshkosh Saturday afternoon in the Kris Russell Volleyball Arena in Whitewater, Wisconsin.  The win gives UW-W a 7-0 mark heading into the league championship.

As you might expect with a high team score, Warhawk gymnasts etched their names among the top ten in the school record book in eight categories Saturday.

Sophomore Katie Thompson (Kingsport, TN/Sullivan South) was the top all-around performer in the meet, and her score of 38.375 is third best in the record book.  Thompson also accounted for top ten marks in two specialties, with her 9.625 on the uneven bars tied for seventh, and her 9.675 on the balance beam tied for eighth in the UW-W book.

Sophomore Mary Kate Young (Lawrenceville, GA/Cullins Hill) accomplished the other top ten entry, earning a 9.65 on the balance beam to tie for tenth in the record book.

The four remaining top ten entries all came in team event scoring.  UW-W's vault team that totaled 47.60 included Kaitlyn Weber (Kansas City, MO/Oak Park)/Leah Applin (Brooklyn Park, MN/Champlin Park), Thompson, Siri Wischmann (Delano, MN/Delano), Katrin Finch (Boise, ID/Boise) and Allison Nelson (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley).  The uneven bars squad totaled 46.975, the second best mark in school history, and that group included Steffani Neusburger, Lauren Corrigan (Clarksville, TN/Clarksville), Young, Thompson, and Allyse Dieringer (Germantown, WI/Germantown).  UW-W scored 48.075 points in the floor exercise, third best all-time, combining the efforts of Applin, Weber, Finch, Thompson and Young.  Not to be left out, the balance beam team score of 46.725 is ninth in the school record book.  That unit included Wischmann, Applin, Dieringer, Thompson and Young.

UW-Whitewater will defend its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title at the 2011 WIAC Championship hosted by UW-Stout in Menomonie, Wisconsin Saturday, March 12.
