Physical Game Ends in 2-2 Tie

It took 110 minutes and thirty fouls between the two teams, but the Warhawk men's soccer team and the Clarke Crusaders finished their game on Sunday in Whitewater just how it started, tied.  The Warhawks and Crusaders battled to a 2-2 after two overtimes couldn't decide a winner.  UW-W remains unbeaten at 2-0-1 while Clarke boasts the same record.

Ty McCoy (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) got UW-W on the board in the first half scoring a goal off of an assist by Matt Jacobs (Mankato, MN/West).  This was the lone goal in the first 45 minutes of play.

The second half intensified and each team produced more than twice as many shots as they had in the first half.  Clarke knotted the score with a goal in the 56th minute on a corner kick that went from the head of one player to the head of another and then found its way into the net.

UW-W recaptured the lead in the 72nd minute on Dan Montanye (Mukwonago/Mukwonago)'s first goal of the season on a pass from McCoy.  Just five minutes later the Crusaders scored the equalizer and the final goal of the match.

UW-W played down a player for much of the second half due to injury and down two in the waning moments of the second overtime.  Even against the odds the Warhawks withstood a great push from the Crusader offense and stifled any chance of them winning.  Aaron Sesselmann (Green Bay/Notre Dame Academy) made several huge saves in the overtime periods to preserve the tie.

The Warhawks will travel to Loras on September 8 for a match beginning at 8:00 pm.  UW-W will be home again on September 29 when they host the University of Dubuque in a match beginning at 7:30 pm.
