The UW-Whitewater volleyball team, ranked fifth in the American Volleyball Coaches Association top 25 poll, defeated Iowa Wesleyan 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-10) Friday afternoon in the first match of the UW-Whitewater Invitational. Whitewater jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead including four service aces by
Christina DeGroot (Kewaskum/Kewaskum). Iowa Wesleyan came back to within two, 7-5 but a 9-3 Warhawk run extended the UW-W lead to 16-8. Whitewater finished out the game on a 9-5 run to take the first set 25-13.
The second set went back-and-forth with teams exchanging points until an 8-4 UW-W run widened the gap to 19-13 and forced a IWC timeout. The Warhawks battled for the finishing points to take set 25-19.
Whitewater used the momentum built up in the first two sets to roll to third set victory 25-10.
Ariel Johnston (Rockford, IL/Guilford) led the Warhawks at the net with eight kills.
Caitlin Hogan (New London/New London) and
Sofia Sanchez (Janesville/Craig) contributed seven kills apiece. DeGroot dished out 34 assists to the Warhawk hitters and added six service aces in the contest.
Alyssa Bauer (Naperville, IL/Central) led UW-W defensively with 14 digs.
Whitewater is scheduled to face Emory University, ranked third in the AVCA, at 7:00 pm Friday, September 24. The volleyball arena will be dedicated as the Kris Russell Volleyball Arena before the match.
