Warhawk Classic Yields Three Qualifiers

Sara Poppe, Brooke Bell and Jessa Luebke met National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III provisional qualifying standards to lead UW-Whitewater at the Warhawk Classic in Kachel Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon in Whitewater.  UW-W finished fifth in the nine team field.

Team scores were Winona State 134.5, University of Chicago 114.5, UW-Oshkosh 102, North Central 97, UW-Whitewater 70, Loras College 46.5, Augustana College 34, UW-Parkside 29.5, and Judson College 13.  Chicago is ranked fifth in the latest United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division III poll, Oshkosh is second, North Central twelfth, and UW-Whitewater seventeenth.

Poppe won the triple jump with a leap of 37-0.25, the best jump by a Warhawk this season.  Belle finished third in a fast field of the 55 meters, with her time of 7.28 also a team season best.  Both Poppe and Bell met provisional standards with their performances.  Bell also contributed a second place in the 200 meters at 25.60, another season best, and Poppe took third in the long jump at 16-9.75.  Luebke finished seventh in the shot put (42-8.75), but the strength of her field is indicated by one automatic qualifier and six provisional in the shot. 

Other top finishers for UW-W included Megan Morehart, third in the 55 hurdles with a team season best 8.81 in the preliminaries; Jackie Nett, fourth in the 800 in a team season best 2:21.82; Tiera Barmore, fourth in the triple jump (35-1); and Ryanne Bell, sixth in the pole vault, tying the team season best of 10-6.

Both of Whitewater's relays also contributed points.  The 4x200 took second with another team season best performance, 1:50.87.  The 4x400 relay placed sixth (4:15.13).

UW-W will compete in the Fightin' Scot Invitational at Monmouth College (IL) Saturday, February 13.  The final home appearance of 2010 will be Friday, March 5 at the Karl Schlender Last Chance Meet.
