Men's Soccer Edged in Second Round of NCAA

Dominican University defeated UW-Whitewater 1-0 in the second round of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III men's soccer tournament Sunday afternoon in River Forest, Illinois.  For complete information see UW-W's Tournament Central site.

The only ball into the net came at 15:21 by Edwin Lagunas with an assist from Aaron Romo.  It was Lagunas' ninth goal of the season.

UW-W had two chances to tie in the first half.  Alex Szarzynski (Greenfield/South Milwaukee) at 22:15 and a Ryan Richgels (Madison/Memorial) header at 24:02 were saved by Stars goalie Maxwell Gutbrod.

The Warhawks had another opportunity to knot the score at 46:57 when the Stars committed a foul in the box and UW-W's Dan Montayne's penalty kick was stopped by Gutbroad.  Whitewater had three more shots stopped by Gutbrod in the second half.  

Whitewater took sixteen shots, Dominican five.  Warhawk goalie Andrew Krueger (New Berlin/Catholic Memorial) made two saves.  The Warhawks also had eight corner kicks to four for DU, and the Stars committed 21 fouls to 11 for UW-Whitewater. 

Whitewater was making its ninth appearance in the NCAA III soccer tournament.  The Warhawks advanced to the round of sixteen in 1999 and 2001.

UW-W and Dominican tied 1-1 September 24 in River Forest during the regular season.  UW-W ends the season 12-6-3.

Dominican advances to play the winner of a second round game between Loras College and Macalester College, which will be played Sunday night.  The NCAA III men's soccer sectional, with sites to be determined, will be played November 20-22.  The four sectional winners will meet in San Antonio, Texas December 4-5.
